Discus Fish
Discus are the rarely disputed king of the aquarium fish. Most serious fish keepers aspire to own these majestic cichlids at some stage of their hobby. Due to their captivating disc shape and intricate patterns discus fish are desirable pets to own.
Discus Varieties
Discus sold and kept commonly are usually a hybrid between two very closely related Symphysodon species. This has allowed a multitude of variations to be produced in addition to the original brown fish. Turquoise, red, orange, green, cobalt and white discus have been selectively bred to satisfy the many tastes of aquarium owners. Different fin variations have also been developed that have spawned such varieties as the diamond discus.
Why People Choose Discus Cichlids
The overall body shape of this fish makes it unique. Like a swimming vertical saucer the discus fish is very round and compressed. When the fins are measured this fish is taller than it is wide. It glides around in the water with the poise and dignity that one would expect from such a highly decorated fish. This exquisite form along with the vivid colors makes the striking appearance of the discus welcome in any aquarium.
Live Discus Fish For Sale
When people buy discus they can choose from specimens at both ends of the price spectrum. The cost is typically $50 to $250 per fish though some cheaper examples are offered from time to time.
